Lungu’s Health Inquiry Called 'Mischievous' by PF

February 20, 2025

Brenda Nyirenda, the Deputy Secretary General of the Patriotic Front (PF), has sharply criticized the government over its recent inquiry into former President Edgar Lungu's health, calling it both unnecessary and mischievous.

Nyirenda's remarks came after a directive was issued by First Deputy Speaker Attractor Chisangano on Tuesday, instructing Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima to provide an update on Lungu’s well-being.

The PF leader questioned the government's motivations, asserting that Lungu is no longer in office and has not been receiving any support from the government.

"It makes no sense for the government to inquire about his health when he is no longer their property," Nyirenda declared, arguing that such actions could be seen as an unwarranted intrusion into the former president's private life.

Lungu, who served as Zambia's sixth president from 2015 to 2021, has largely remained out of the political spotlight since losing the presidency to Hakainde Hichilema in the 2021 elections.

Despite his relatively low profile, Lungu remains a significant figure within the PF, which has been embroiled in internal divisions since the election.

Nyirenda’s comments come at a time when political tensions within the PF continue to simmer, with factionalism leading to increasing fractures within the once-dominant party.

The PF has been grappling with its future direction following its electoral defeat, and Nyirenda’s strong stance on Lungu’s health inquiry reflects the underlying disputes that persist within the party.

Critics of the inquiry argue that it may be a politically motivated attempt to target Lungu or discredit him, particularly as the former president remains influential in Zambian politics.

The government's request for an update on Lungu's health has also raised concerns about the use of public resources for personal matters.

At the heart of the controversy lies a question of respect for personal privacy and the delicate balance between political scrutiny and the well-being of former leaders.

The government's actions, and Nyirenda’s vocal opposition, are expected to fuel ongoing debates about the relationship between former and current leaders in Zambia.

As this situation unfolds, all eyes will be on both the PF and the government to see if they can resolve the simmering tensions or if this issue will lead to further political friction.
