Tonse Alliance Urges Self-Defense Against UPND and Police Aggression
IN A BOLD declaration during its 6th Council of Leaders (CoL) meeting over the week-end, the Tonse Alliance has directed its members and supporters to stand firm against both alleged UPND-led violence and police brutality.
The meeting, chaired by Alliance leader and former President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, underscored the coalition’s resolve to protect its members while preparing for the high-stakes 2026 general elections.
The Alliance accused the Zambia Police Service of enabling violence by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and attempting to intimidate opposition members.
In response, the Tonse Alliance called on its supporters to defend themselves against both UPND aggression and any unlawful actions by the police.
“We shall not be intimidated by UPND violence nor police brutality,” the Alliance declared. “Any aggression will be met with equal and proportionate force.”
This strong stance signals a significant escalation in Zambia’s political landscape as the opposition coalition rallies its base.
In a strategic move to bolster its ranks, the Alliance officially welcomed the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), led by President Edith Nawakwi.
This addition marks a major milestone in the Alliance’s efforts to unify opposition forces and present a formidable challenge to the UPND government.
The inclusion of FDD reflects the Tonse Alliance’s commitment to building a broad-based coalition capable of addressing Zambia’s pressing socio-economic and political challenges.
The Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) party, under the leadership of Counsel Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF), has been extended a formal invitation to join the Alliance.
KBF attended the CoL meeting as a guest, signaling strong prospects for collaboration once admission procedures are completed.
The potential addition of ZMP to the Alliance highlights the coalition’s strategy of inclusivity and collective strength.
As the 2026 general elections draw closer, the Tonse Alliance is positioning itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party.
Through strategic expansions, leadership appointments, and a resolute stance against perceived threats, the Alliance is galvanizing its members for what promises to be a decisive political showdown.
This is contained in a statement issued by alliance Spokesperson Sean Tembo.
