Socialist Party Dismisses UPND-Sponsored Opinion Polls as Manipulative Propaganda

THE
Socialist Party (SP) has called on Zambians to disregard what it terms "fake and manipulative" opinion polls allegedly sponsored by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

Chief Advisor to the SP President, Brian Hapunda, accused the UPND of using a Kenyan PR firm to bolster President Hakainde Hichilema’s image ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Reacting to a recent Facebook opinion poll asking, "If elections were called today, who would you vote for?"—in which President Hichilema emerged as the preferred candidate—Hapunda labeled the results as fabricated.

“The SP is aware of the fake and manipulated polls run and sponsored by the UPND government through their hired Kenyan firm to build an image for President Hichilema,” Hapunda stated. “These deceptive tactics are a desperate attempt to create an illusion of support amid the UPND’s waning popularity.”

Hapunda urged the UPND to take lessons from previous administrations that relied on misleading opinion polls, only to face significant backlash during elections. He emphasized that Zambians are not easily swayed by artificial metrics, especially given the current economic hardships.

“The rising cost of living has deeply affected households across Zambia. Citizens have already made up their minds to oppose the UPND government, and no amount of manipulated polls will change that,” he asserted.

Instead of investing in opinion polls, Hapunda urged the UPND to prioritize fulfilling the campaign promises they made ahead of the 2021 general elections.

He highlighted that three national budgets have already been presented by the UPND government, with only one more remaining before the 2026 elections.

“With just one budget left before August 2026, skepticism is mounting over the government’s ability to address the country’s economic challenges effectively,” Hapunda said.

The Socialist Party’s comments come amid growing calls for change among Zambians dissatisfied with the current administration’s performance.

Hapunda expressed confidence in the public’s resolve to vote for a new government, dismissing the polls as a futile effort to mask reality.

“Zambians are eager for regime change,” Hapunda concluded. “The UPND should focus on real governance issues instead of relying on manipulative tactics to maintain power.”
