In a major political shift, the Patriotic Front (PF) has lost all its constituency structures in Petauke, including prominent Constituency Chairperson Felix Ngulube and ward representatives, who have defected to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
Speaking at the defection ceremony, Felix Ngulube cited the PF’s lack of direction as the primary reason for the mass exodus. He revealed that internal disarray within the opposition party had left its members disillusioned, prompting councillors in the constituency to align with the UPND’s vision for development.
Ngulube lauded the UPND government’s impactful social programs, such as the Cash for Work Program, Emergency Transfers, and the Social Cash Transfer initiative. He emphasized that these policies reflect the UPND’s dedication to uplifting all Zambians, regardless of political affiliation.
“I, as a PF Chairperson, can now freely access Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize without being questioned about my political ties—something unimaginable during our time in power. This government has set a commendable example,” Ngulube said.
Declaring the PF a “finished political party” without a viable strategy for survival, Ngulube pledged his unwavering support for the UPND candidate, Severian Lungu, in the upcoming parliamentary by-election. He called the move the only logical step toward meaningful development in Petauke.
UPND Eastern Province Chairperson Johabbie Mtonga welcomed the defectors, urging them to collaborate harmoniously with existing party structures to bolster the UPND’s influence in the constituency.
The defections coincide with declarations of support for the UPND candidate by all eight ward councillors in Petauke Constituency and several area Members of Parliament. This shift suggests a strong likelihood of a decisive victory for Severian Lungu in the by-election, given the overwhelming backing from both defectors and the electorate.
Special Assistant to the President for Political Affairs Levy Ngoma praised the defectors for their bold decision to join President Hakainde Hichilema’s transformative agenda. Ngoma reiterated that the government’s policies aim to uplift communities and ensure equitable resource distribution nationwide.
The defections signify a pivotal moment in Petauke’s political landscape, solidifying the UPND’s dominance in Eastern Province and reinforcing public trust in the ruling party’s leadership.
